The 2021 corruption perception index was released by Transparency International, which ranked Nigeria 154th out of 180 nations assessed methodologically.
According to the results presented on Tuesday in Abuja by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, TI’s representative in Nigeria, Nigeria scored 24 out of 100 points in the 2021 CPI, down one point from the 2020 CPI.
Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC, argued that corruption in Nigeria has played a significant role in the country’s underdevelopment.
Despite previous administrations claiming to be anti-corruption, he said, job opportunities, the acquisition of a driver’s license, and passport applications, among other things, were still fraught with corruption, particularly because officials in charge of these vital services expect some form of kickback while performing their duties.
According to Transparency International, corruption is to blame for increased insecurity, high unemployment, systemic failure in healthcare delivery, and leadership dysfunctions.
“The CPI compiles information from eight different sources to provide country experts and business people’s perspectives on the amount of corruption in the public sector.
“While the index does not demonstrate particular instances of corruption in Nigeria, it does reflect the country’s opinion of corruption.” “The index is entirely neutral, objective, and universally recognized as the most commonly used cross-country metric for measuring corruption,” said a spokesperson from Transparency International in Nigeria.
