Gernot Rohr, the former head coach of Nigeria, has responded to the uproar caused by current coach Augustine Eguavoen’s admission that he included some players in his last team to placate some Nigeria Football Federation bigwigs.

In an interview with ESPN, Rohr stated unequivocally that the top brass of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had no influence on his choice.

Eguavoen announced a 32-man roster for the 2022 World Cup playoffs against Ghana, with seven players on standby.

Watford’s Oghenekaro Etebo and Ogenyi Onazi were two players whose presence sparked outrage.

After leaving Turkish second division side Denizlispor in December, Onazi remained without a club until joining Saudi Arabia’s Al Adalah.

For the Knights of the Oasis, the defensive midfielder has yet to make an appearance.

Eguavoen later revealed that he included the ex-Lazio player in order to “please everyone.”

Rohr has now admitted that while he was in charge, certain persons tried to sway his team choices.

“It is not the time to discuss the ‘advice’ I received from them about which individuals we can invite to the national team,” he continued, “because I want the players to concentrate on the World Cup.”

“However, they couldn’t sway my decisions.”
