Benfica’s Club President Said Portuguese Could Not Turn Down Liverpool’s Offer For Darwin. The 23-year-old signed a six-year contract after completing a €100million (£86m) move from Benfica to Liverpool in the summer.

Benfica’s club president Rui Costa has stated that the Portuguese side could not turn down Liverpool’s offer for Darwin Nunez.

Nunez scored 48 goals and provided 16 assists in 85 appearances for Benfica, but the club president has claimed it was “completely impossible” to reject a bid from the Reds.

Speaking to BTV, Costa said: “We are talking about one of the highest transfers of the market. We are still coming out of a pandemic situation, which held back the football market.

Benfica’s Club President Said Portuguese Could Not Turn Down Liverpool’s Offer For Darwin. “Making a sale of €75m (£65m) plus €25m (£22m) is not open to discussion. The sale of Darwin is more than justified.

“There weren’t even conditions to keep him, it was completely impossible, for the values that came into the club and for what Darwin went on to earn.”

Since joining the Reds, Nunez has scored two goals in his five competitive appearances, but he was suspended for three Premier League games after being sent off against Crystal Palace.
